A brief commentary.

Today, my dad was reading an article in the Citizen (full of its usual trashy crap). The article was talking about the devastation (*gasp*) of the new Sasser worm and its spreading around the world.

My dad intoned: "So that's the virus that hit my machine this morning."

I looked him straight in the eye and said: "If that worm hit you, your IT guy is completely incompetent and should be fired immediately and replaced. The security bulletin was released nearly a week ago and your machines should be on auto-update anyways. Fire him."

My dad laughed out loud, and proceeded to rudely ridicule me in front of the two other people present. It went something like:

"Riiiiight. Don't tell me bull like that. Look, it says here that Delta airlines got hit. Are you saying that Delta Airlines doesn't have the best IT people in the world working for them, and they're incompetent? You don't know what you're talking about. Ha, ha, ha."

I responded politely with: "Look, I do this for a living. It's very simple." I explained the basics to him. With a I'm-just-humouring-you look he continued to ridicule me throughout and told me I was full of it, that this was beyond me and I had no idea what I was talking about.

I put my hands up and said, "Fine, believe what you want. Enjoy your ignorance and keep an incompetent person in IT lying to you. Simply put, did your machine crash this morning? Yes or no? I rest my case." And I left it at that.

What the hell does he think I'm completing a degree in computer systems engineering? Most of the IT people who have these positions were educated in the 70s. They haven't bothered to update themselves on the simple workings and vulnerabilities of the Windows operating systems, and get paid hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, and waste hundreds of thousands more in budgets because of this incompetence. When I suggested to my father that they fire him and hire me, and that I could do his job for less than half the budget with less than half the issues they currently face I was extremely rudely laughed at, like a little child.

It sickens me. This delusion creates a market of its own, and people have the audacity of calling ME the Technocrat.
