Open the Windows...

...and take a deep breath of fresh air.

It's not quite the 19 degrees forecasted but this time of year they always report the best case scenario. Anxious to put those double digits on the forecast I guess. But 14 plus sunshine is warm enough to open the windows for a couple of hours this afternoon and let in some much needed fresh air into the apartment.

Yes, they have a policy for discrimination? I also like to participate in walks that raise money for cancer.

Thesis OT

Looks like I'm in it for the summer term. I don't really mind. Two semesters is really tight and I'm crazy taking on as much as I did but I think it will be worth it in the end. Another call for papers and conference proposal to get ready in the next couple weeks. But my last class was today so that relieves some time stress and frees up my schedule. Time to get some serious work done.

Unsettling typing

It's always so weird typing after trimming my nails especially when I only cut the chipped ones.

P.S. Sorry blog, I missed your birthday a few days ago. 3 years old!

B.C./A.D. vs B.C.E./C.E.

I went to the James Kugel lecture last week on "The Bible's Earliest Interpreters". At one point he paused to clarify his terminology. B.C.E. (Before Common Era) and C.E. (Common Era) have become the academic/politically correct terms but he occasionally slips back to the traditional B.C/A.D. He went on to explain that one professor he used to work with insisted on using the traditional terms so Prof. Kugel asked why. Well B.C., Before Christ(ianity) is an historical fact, a point of reference. So how did he defend using A.D.? Easy "After D'at"!

(for those of you who don't know A.D. is the abbreviation for the Latin phrase Anno Domini Nostri Iesu Christi "In the Year of Our Lord Jesus Christ")

Pet peeve to the extreme

I know several people who get annoyed when they go to open one of a pair of doors and it's locked. Why have two doors if you're not going to use them? Or if you have to have them for fire safety, you may as well use them.

For most people this is an annoying inconvenience but the other day I witnessed the extreme example. The door that was locked was the one connected to the handicap button! As I was going out the right hand door, someone in a wheelchair was pulling up to the left. When nothing happened, I tried opening the door from the other side and realized it was locked. So I held the right door open for him and as he passed through he said: "I hate it when that happens" as if this is a common occurrence.

And the culprit... wait for it... the University library. Unbelievable.

Interview went well

I had my interview with the SOM rep this morning and in spite of the early morning, I think it went very well. Just a preliminary interview, very casual, a chance for both sides to ask questions (and maybe try to impress each other). If I'm still interested after graduating, I can set up another interview at the NY office. Definately a possibility.
