Back from London and Veg'n

We actually came back on Boxing Day but updating my blog felt like too much work for my decompressing, vegetating state.

Great time with the family with lots of great Hanukkah gifts later added too with some Chapters purchases (actually that was a belated birthday present, I didn't want to buy anything with the gift card before Hanukkah in case anyone got me something from my Chapter's wishlist). That means the Bookshelf will be updated soon.

Christmas Eve was at Grandma's as usual. Finally got to meet Jesse's girl, Bee. And though we thought it was the first time Mekki got to meet Jes, we forgot about the anniversary party a few years ago. This was also the first year all the cousins were over 19. Mekki was amused that this meant "Santa" did most of his shopping at the LCBO.

For those of you wondering about "Christmas Eve" I usually tell people that I don't celebrate Christmas but that my mom's family uses it as a reason to get everyone together, but I guess that is what most people do for Christmas.

New Years with some friends tomorrow should be nice but I will miss the traditional Gelbard late night dinner - chicken cordon bleu - yum!

Still keeping up on some reading for my thesis but I've been trying to take it easy and relax for a bit. I was getting pretty stressed out but I think I'm just about ready to get back to work.

Yay! I'm not poor.

Finally got the paper work sorted out and the university is going to refund me a good amount of the NY conference expences.

*sigh of relief (a big one)*

Speaking of conferences, my thesis supervisor has sent me a call for papers for another one in March in Montreal. Could be interesting and organizing a couple of days in Montreal won't be as stressful as NYC, though it was absolutely worth it.

My head is spinning

Remember, Pi was a precautionary tale...

...trepanation is not the solution.

My paper is following me. Everywhere I turn, there it is. It's on the radio. It's on tv. It comes to all my classes. It's in all my readings. It's in every conversation.

Hermeneutics and numerology... they're dangerous (but fun) things. And who is the Other?

Flashback to bake sales

1.Were you one of those kids who used to bring home made goodies to your class bake sales? Everyone else brought store bought junk and you sat there all alone because no body wanted the really tasty but maybe not as pretty or recognizeable homemade treats. The upside is that meant you got to eat all the leftovers.

2. Do you always end up bringing home more food from a pot luck than you brought in the first place? Is it telling that no one else wants the leftovers of what they brought?

There was a potluck for our last day of class and I made one of my favourite potluckable dishes - sweet noodle kugel. Yum. It's easy to make, easy to serve and fits the common requirement of "make something from your cultural background". Only three of the twenty pieces were eaten. Me, my friend Marie and the prof. You would think anthropology students would be more open to trying something different. Oh well. Mekki and I will enjoy the leftovers.

White and Red December

The snow has finally come. December 1. Very punctual. We had an hour or so of snow back in mid-October but not enough to collect on the ground.

To add to the double take when I looked out the kitchen window this morning, a whole lot of red. Four male cardinals and three females. I don't think I've ever seen that many together. Usually just see the male, maybe his girl. Cool but still no Georgie (our pet groundhog who liked to eat the dandelions in the backyard). I miss Georgie . Please come back Georgie. Sleep well.
