DSLR help

Can anyone give me or point me to a crash course in DSLR cameras?

I've finally admitted that digital cameras are probably now at the point of giving me the control I want compared to a manual SLR. Perhaps it is time to give up on the cemetary of three minoltas (one has a stuck mirror, one has power issues and one has light meter issues) and several lenses and make the switch to digital now that the cost of repairing the old ones is almost that of buying a new digital.

Specifically, does anyone know if my lenses are still useable, the lenses fit the Minolta SRT/X7A series? I've heard there are adapters but I'm not sure the person I was asking understood that I meant lenses from a non-digital camera.

As a starter, I'm looking at the Canon Digital Rebel XT, just because it happens to be on sale.

Invisible JCC

I was going to go to the Dr. Ruth lecture tonight on "HEAVENLY SEX: SEXUALITY IN JEWISH TRADITION" but after a half hour of circling the neighbourhood trying to find the Soloway JCC I gave up and came home. It looks like its on a private street that doesn't show up on maps but google maps showed where it should be but I couldn't find any signs of it. I'm really disappointed. I was looking forward to the lecture and the chance to meet some more people with the Centre for Jewish Studies.

Movie on the side

I was sitting down to get some drawing done and decided to pick out a movie to keep me company. I prefer movies I know for this sort of thing and I had narrowed my selection down to three.

1. Prince of Egypt
2. Lawrence of Arabia
3. White Christmas

I started watching the intro to White Christmas when the irony hit me. Jews, Arabs and Christians. Really, I do have movies that are not related to architecture and/or religion. But I decided that maybe White Christmas was maybe the wrong choice while working on a design for a Jewish home so I'm switching to Prince of Egypt.

HL2 Architecture

If Mies and Frank Lloyd Wright were in a fight...

Seems like I was just asking Mekki this the other day when we were in New York standing in front of the Seagram building. I said Mies would win because he'd have all the details figured out like weakening FLW's cane to make sure it would snap should he be attacked with it.

Now we can test "If you were in a death match in a Mies or Frank Lloyd Wright building..." Close enough.

This architecture student has created HL2 maps based on Mies' Farnsworth House and FLW's Falling Waters (among many other cool looking maps). Very cool!

Movie Selection

Two movies for today's homework (I can learn to deal with movie watching as productive use of time) :

Thank You for Smoking. (recommended by Culture and Symbol Prof)
Pi. (recommended by thesis advisor)

Still digesting. Will let you know what I think later.

Time Square

Time Square

Finally got to "be a part of it... New York! New York!"

Great time... may as well have been running the marathon. A very busy four days, so much to see... so little time. We did pretty good though: Museum of Natural History, MoMA, Guggenheim, Boat Tour, Empire State Building, Time Square, Broadway show, good food, lots of walking and wandering about town... oh and the conference.

Absolutely recommend the CityPass and Metro Pass for anyone going to NYC! And avoid New Jersey Transit.

More pictures on my flickr site and more details about the trip still to come.

Sens Tickets

There's a fundraiser going on at Carleton and I/Mekki have access to tickets for the Sens vs Minnesota game on Monday Nov 20. The tickets are for the big party suite at Scotiabank Place, which comes with all kinds of kool stuff while we're there.

Tickets are $100 each, all inclusive. If you're interested in attending, please contact me ASAP with the number of tickets you would like (I have lots available right now, but they're going fast) and we can arrange the exchange.

(You can enjoy watching the Sens lose!..I mean not lose.)
